Abruzzo
Abruzzo is the most beautiful region in Italy!!! With spectacular vistas from the dramatic and majestic Appenines to the azure blue of the Adriatic.
Granted, I didn’t realise it existed – yes, I had heard of the tragic earthquake in L’Aquila in 2009 but I had no geographic appreciation of the area it was situated in at all!
Movies filmed in the region:
- La Strada
- Ladyhawke – starring Michelle Pfeiffer & Sam Neill
- Red Sonja – starring Arnold Schwarznegger
- The American – starring George Clooney
- The Fox and The Child
Famous persons with roots in this amazing land:
- Pontius Pilate (possibly born in the town of Bisenti)
- Dean Martin
- Henry Mancini
- Rocky Marciano (The Boxer of ‘Rocky’ Fame)
- Ovid (The poet)
Amazing Wine & Liqueurs:
- Trebbiano – Bianco/White
- Montepulciano – Rosso/Red
- Vino Cotto – Literally a cooked wine
- Cerasuolo – Rosé
- Colline Teramane
- Colli Aprutini
- Controguerra
- Genziana – an intense liqueur from Gentian Flowers
- Centerbe – a bitter liqueur from 100 Herbs
Delicious Food:
- Saffron
- Pecorino – Sheeps Cheese
- Scamorza – Fresh Cows Cheese
- Peperoncino/Diavolini – Hot Red Chillies
- Arrosticini – Spit Roasted Morsels of Lamb
- Maccheroni alla Chitarra – a pasta made on a wooden frame resembling a guitar hence chitarra
- Cinghiale – Wild Boar
Although I have done little more than scratch the surface to entice you, perhaps this has peaked your interest in this little known haven called Abruzzo. Join me as I explore the region and renovate my little Palazzo.
